In one study, acupuncture
was used to treat 40 patients with bilateral Graves’ ophthalmopathy
who had all had at least 18mm of proptosis together with lid retraction
and other eye signs, and had shown no response to immunosuppressive
and local radiotherapy. Treatments were given every day up to a
total of 45. 70% showed some reduction in proptosis after treatment.
Lid retraction was present in in 41 eyes before the acupuncture
and was reduced in all but four cases. (Wu, Jin & Zheng 1985)
